The status of EU student fees and loans for 2018/19 in the UK after Brexit

It has been confirmed today by the UK Government that EU students applying to study in the academic year 2018/19 will have their student loans and grants guaranteed for the entirety of their course, even if the course end date is after the point of the UKs exit from the EU.

This applies to all EU students applying for an undergraduate or masters course at an English university in the 2018 to 2019. EU nationals will also remain eligible to apply for Research Council PhD studentships at UK institutions for 2018 to 2019 to help cover costs for the duration of their study.

EU students applying in 2018/19 will also be eligible for the same tuition fees as UK students for the duration of their course, even if it concludes after the UK leaves the EU. This follows the announcement at the end of March that Scottish university home fee status and loans for EU students would be guaranteed for 2018/19 entry.

The full statement can be found on the governments website here. This announcement is incredibly welcome and provides greater clarity for EU students wishing to apply for courses in the 2018-19 academic year. UUK would like to see a new post-Brexit immigration policy that encourages all international students to choose to study in the UK coupled with welcoming messages from Government, recognising their hugely positive social and economic impact on the UK.
